摘要/Abstract:
After some pioneering work with its first-generation instruments AMBER and MIDI, the 2nd generation instruments of the VLTI provides major breakthrough in AGN science. They challenged, confirmed and updated the unified model of AGNs based on a clumpy dust torus combined with a dusty wind. GRAVITY resolved several BLRs by spectro-astrometry up to z~2.3. The next upgrade of the VLTI that is in progress under the labels GRAVITY+ and MATISSE-Wide will extend the access to such observations to a large range of targets with a major program on super massive black hole (SMBH) masses that constrain the SMBH-Galaxy coevolution scenario. The combination of angular measurements from spectro astrometry with linear measurements from reverberation mapping yields direct distance measurements of major interest in the Hubble tension context. Making these measurements unbiased and accurate enough requires advances in modeling and access to independent geometrical constraints (including detection and characterization of binary SMBH that are also a major independent science topic) from higher resolution observations, from shorter wavelengths or longer baselines, two avenues that will be discussed in the presentation.
