题目/Title:The Small-Sized Telescopes and other SiPM technologies for the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory

摘要/Abstract:

The Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO) will be the next-generation ground-based gamma-ray observatory in the energy range from tens of GeV to hundreds of TeV. It will be built at two different sites, one in each hemisphere, to ensure complete sky coverage. The observatory will have telescopes of three different sizes: large, medium and small, with primary reflectors of 23 m, 11.5 m and 4.3 m in diameter respectively. The Small-Sized Telescopes (SSTs) will target the highest energies, with a planned deployment of at least 37 and potentially up to 70 units at the southern site in Paranal, Chile. These SSTs will use a dual-mirror Schwarzschild-Couder design, with a compact SiPM camera measuring about 50 cm and weighing less than 100 kg. At the lowest energies, large telescopes use instead a single-mirror design and a PMT-based camera. However, a potential upgrade to SiPM is already being investigated, called the LST Advanced Camera. In this seminar the design choices for the SST camera and some of the first prototypes for the LST SiPM-based camera will be reported.  Finally, a short overview of typical procedures and methods for observing operations will be given.

个人简介/Biography:

Davide Depaoli specializes in the design and testing of instrumentation and electronics. His doctoral work involved developing a SiPM-based module for the Advanced Camera of the Large-Sized Telescopes of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). Currently, as a postdoctoral researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics, he is furthering his expertise within the Small-Sized Telescope (SST) project of CTA, focusing on finalizing the camera design and setting the camera commissioning facility.
