The imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope (IACT) technique lies at the heart of the most sensitive ground-based gamma ray observatories in the world and will continue to be explored in pursuit of higher sensitivity in the future. In this talk, I will take a pedagogical approach in describing the technique and also use VERITAS as an example to illustrate key technical details in building an IACT observatory. I will end the talk by briefly mentioning how a medium-sized (~20 M$) project like VERITAS is typically managed and executed during the construction phase in the United States.
