摘要/Abstract:
The X-ray source HLX-1 near the galaxy ESO243-49, at about 100 Mpc away, is often taken as the prototypical example of off-nuclear IMBHs, with its soft X-ray spectrum and possible location inside a massive star cluster. It is probably the IMBH candidate with the best set of multiband observations over two decades. Despite all this, I argue that we do not actually know what is going on in HLX-1. In particular, we do not know what is causing the series of X-ray outbursts (a disk instability? a partial tidal disruption?), whether the soft X-ray temperature and luminosity are reliable indicators of the BH mass, where the optical emission is coming from (a disk? a photosphere?), and even whether the system really belongs to ESO243-49. I will outline the unsolved problems and some of the alternative scenarios, and compared HLX-1 with other X-ray-bright IMBH candidates discovered in recent years.
