Introduction:

This lecture will introduce some of the essential concepts that play a role in acceleration of relativistic particles in astrophysical plasmas. Specia attention will be given to the role magnetic fields, transport in collisionless plasmas, and acceleration mechanisms underpinning VHE cosmic rays.

Speaker Biography:

Since 2010, Brian Reville has been a research assistant at the University of Oxford Physics Department. He received his B.Sc.(2004) and Ph.D.(2007) from University College Dublin before moving to the Max-Planck-Institut für Kernphysik, Heidelberg, as an Alexander von Humboldt fellow.
