Introduction:
In this lecture, I will introduce the main observational techniques used to trace atomic and molecular gas, focusing on the 21-cm emission line of neutral hydrogen (H I), CO rotational transitions, and thermal dust emission. In the second part of the lecture, I will explore the connection between interstellar gas and high-energy gamma-ray astronomy. Molecular clouds provide natural targets for cosmic-ray interactions and can therefore serve as probes of the cosmic-ray density and spectrum throughout the Galaxy. I will discuss how gamma-ray observations of molecular clouds can constrain the Galactic cosmic-ray population, particle escape from supernova remnants, and cosmic-ray diffusion in the surrounding interstellar medium.
